Description
The Rado DiaStar Original Open Heart is a women's automatic watch built around the brand's recognisable oval case. It suits anyone who wants a mechanical watch with a distinctive shape and a compact presence on the wrist.
The case is stainless steel and measures 30mm across, with a thickness of 11mm and a 16mm lug width. A sapphire crystal protects the gold dial, which carries a crosshair face style. The movement is a Swiss automatic, and the watch is water resistant to 100 metres.
The stainless steel bracelet closes with a foldover clasp and matches the silver tone of the case. In daily wear this gives a cohesive, polished look that works from the office to evenings out, without needing a winding routine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear the DiaStar Original in the shower or pool?
With 100 m water resistance, the Rado DiaStar Original handles showers and swimming in a pool comfortably. Because it is a bracelet watch with a foldover clasp, rinse it with fresh water afterwards and keep the crown pushed in whenever it is wet.
Is it suitable for daily wear at the office?
Yes in practice, the gold dial, oval stainless steel case and sapphire crystal make the DiaStar Original a polished daily watch. The 11mm thickness slides under most cuffs, and the automatic movement keeps running as long as it is worn regularly.
Will a 30mm case suit my wrist?
A 30mm oval case suits small to medium wrists and wears as a women's watch should. If you normally prefer watches over 36mm, you may find it compact, so try it on a wrist with similar proportions before choosing.
How does the DiaStar Original compare with a quartz alternative?
The Swiss automatic movement runs without a battery, which sets it apart from quartz watches at similar prices. Versus a quartz model, you give up some accuracy and accept periodic servicing, in return for mechanical character and no battery changes.
Do I need to wind it, and how often should it be serviced?
The automatic movement winds from wrist motion, so wearing it daily keeps it running. If it stops after sitting unworn, give the crown a few turns to restart it. Service is generally recommended every five years or so by a qualified watchmaker.
Can I change the bracelet on this Rado?
The bracelet is stainless steel with a 16mm lug width, so any replacement strap must match that size. Many owners keep the original bracelet for its silver tone and foldover clasp, but a 16mm leather strap will also fit.
Editor's take
Rado's DiaStar line has long been associated with scratch-resistant materials and sculpted, oval cases, and this Original Open Heart keeps that identity in a compact women's automatic. It is aimed at buyers who want a mechanical watch that looks different from the usual round dress piece.
The Swiss automatic movement is the main draw, paired with a sapphire crystal that protects the gold dial and its crosshair layout. The stainless steel case is 30mm wide and 11mm thick, so it sits compactly yet carries real presence. A rating of 100 m water resistance is generous for a dressy watch.
The trade-off is size and thickness. At 30mm with an 11mm profile, the oval case will feel small to anyone used to larger watches, and the 16mm lug width limits strap options. The foldover clasp is secure but offers little micro-adjustment compared with some deployant designs.
It suits women who value shape and a mechanical heart over sheer size. For a similar budget, a round Swiss automatic from Tissot or Longines is the natural alternative if a more conventional case is preferred, though few match the oval case character here.
