How does the synthetic sapphire crystal compare to traditional mineral glass?
The synthetic sapphire crystal on the Stuhrling Winchester 3964L.3 offers superior scratch resistance compared to standard mineral glass. This makes the watch face more durable and helps maintain its clear appearance over time, enhancing its longevity for daily use.

The 44mm case of the Stuhrling Winchester 3964L.3 provides a bold presence on the wrist. While it's a popular size for men's watches, individuals with smaller wrists might find it wears quite large. It generally suits wrist sizes from 6.5 to 8 inches well.

Editor's take
The Stuhrling Original Winchester 3964L.3 positions itself as an accessible entry into the world of mechanical skeleton watches, catering to enthusiasts who appreciate the intricate dance of gears and springs. This model from the Winchester collection offers a bold aesthetic, making it a conversation starter for those who enjoy showcasing their timepiece's inner workings.
Underneath its captivating exterior lies a reliable automatic mechanical movement that powers the watch through the wearer's natural motion, negating the need for battery replacements. The substantial 44mm stainless steel case is topped with a durable synthetic sapphire crystal, offering good scratch resistance for daily wear. While boasting a 100m water resistance rating, the manufacturer's practical advice suggests it's best for splashes rather than full immersion.
One objective consideration is the watch's size; at 44mm, it might feel quite large on smaller wrists, potentially overwhelming a more formal attire. Furthermore, the tang buckle on the leather strap, while functional, lacks the refined feel and security of a deployant clasp often found on watches in a similar aesthetic category. Its practical water resistance also limits its versatility for active lifestyles.
Ultimately, the Stuhrling Winchester 3964L.3 is best suited for individuals seeking a visually striking dress or casual watch that proudly displays its mechanical heart. For those prioritising robust water resistance or a more understated profile, exploring other automatic dress watches or even field watches might offer more suitable alternatives.
