Orient Mako II FAA02001B, 42mm, Black Dial

The F6922 calibre inside the Mako II represents a significant update, introducing both hacking seconds and manual winding capabilities to the collection. This in-house automatic movement provides a day and date display, neatly framed at the three o'clock position, and offers dependable performance for the wearer. The crown at three o'clock controls all functions, a shift from the prior generation's pusher system.

A 41.5mm stainless steel case provides a balanced presence on the wrist, suitable for a wide range of activities. Its 120-click unidirectional rotating bezel operates with satisfying precision, allowing for the timing of short intervals. Combined with a screw-down crown, the watch secures a water resistance rating across 200 meters, making it a reliable companion for recreational diving and water sports.

Legibility is a core strength, with a deep black dial that creates a strong background for the luminous hands and applied hour markers. The straightforward layout ensures information is available at a quick glance in various lighting conditions.

For the enthusiast entering the world of mechanical watches, the Orient Mako II is a foundational choice. It delivers a complete, in-house package without a prohibitive cost. The upgrade to the F6922 calibre was a critical move, adding the modern conveniences of hacking and hand-winding that were absent in its predecessor, making daily operation much more straightforward.

The watch's primary strength is its robust specification sheet for the price. A 41.5mm case in stainless steel with a 200-meter water resistance rating is not always a given in this segment. Orient's vertical integration allows them to deliver a cohesive and purpose-built tool watch that feels solid and capable right out of the box.

Certain compromises are present to meet its accessible price. The choice of a Mineral Crystal over sapphire means the face is more susceptible to scratches, requiring more care from the owner. The bracelet's hollow end links and standard folding clasp lack the tight tolerances and refined feel of more expensive hardware.

Despite these tradeoffs, the Mako II, specifically this black dial FAA02001B reference, remains one of the most recommended entry-level automatic divers. It provides an authentic mechanical experience and durable build that serves as an excellent daily wearer or a starting point for a collection. It is a benchmark for value.
