Description
The Rado DiaStar Original Automatic is a gold-toned men's dress watch built around the brand's scratch-resistant design heritage. It suits anyone who wants a distinctive, polished piece for formal wear and everyday smart occasions.
The case combines CVD-coated hardmetal with stainless steel and measures 43 mm across and 11.9 mm thick. A Swiss automatic movement drives the round gold dial, which is covered by a facetted sapphire crystal. Water resistance is rated at 3 bar, or 30 metres, which covers splashes and light rain.
The standout detail is the 80 hour power reserve, so the watch keeps running through a long weekend off the wrist. Crystal indexes and a date display sit on the dial, and a gold PVD stainless steel bracelet with a fold-over clasp completes the look.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear the Rado DiaStar Original in the shower or pool?
It is rated to 3 bar, or 30 metres, which only covers splashes and light rain. Showering and swimming are best avoided, since hot water and pressure from movement can stress the seals on this Rado DiaStar Original over time.
How long will it run if I leave it on the dresser?
The Swiss automatic movement has an 80 hour power reserve, so it typically keeps running for more than three days off the wrist. After a longer break, give it a few turns of the crown or wear it a while to restart comfortably.
Is it suitable for a smaller wrist?
The case is 43 mm across and 11.9 mm thick, with an 18 mm lug width, so it sits prominently on slimmer wrists. It suits average to larger wrists best, and the fold-over clasp helps fine-tune the fit.
Is it practical for daily sport or office wear?
It works well as an office or evening watch thanks to its gold finish and sapphire crystal. For sport or heavy daily use, a more robust alternative with higher water resistance is a better match than this Rado.
What is different versus a standard steel dress automatic?
The Rado stands out with a gold dial with crystal indexes, a facetted sapphire crystal and a hardmetal and steel case. Compared with plainer steel automatics, it trades discretion for visual character and a long reserve.
Does it need battery or service care?
As an automatic it has no battery to change. Expect periodic service by a qualified watchmaker, commonly every few years, including a water resistance check to keep the 30 m rating dependable.
Editor's take
Rado's DiaStar line made its name on scratch-resistant materials, and this Original Automatic carries that identity into a gold-toned dress format for men. It is aimed at buyers who want something visually distinctive rather than a conventional three-hand steel watch.
The Swiss automatic movement is the main technical draw, with an 80 hour power reserve that outlasts most weekends. The case mixes CVD-coated hardmetal with stainless steel, and the dial sits under a facetted sapphire crystal with crystal indexes and a date display.
The trade-off is water resistance. At 3 bar (30 m) it handles splashes only, so swimming and showering are off the table, and at 43 mm and 11.9 mm thick it is a substantial watch on slimmer wrists. The gold finish also suits formal settings more than rugged daily wear.
It makes sense for someone who values design character and a long power reserve in a dress context. For a quieter look at similar money, a steel-dial Swiss automatic with a fold-over clasp bracelet is the natural alternative.
