Description
The Rado DiaStar Original is a 35 mm Swiss automatic watch with a gold dial and a gold-tone stainless steel bracelet. Its compact size suits both men and women who like a refined, jewellery-style piece for dressier occasions.
The case combines CVD-coated hardmetal, stainless steel and PVD, and measures 11.9 mm thick with an oval profile. A faceted sapphire crystal covers the dial, where crystal and blue crystal indexes mark the hours. Inside is a Swiss automatic movement with a date display, and water resistance is rated at 3 bar, or 30 m.
The standout detail is the 80-hour power reserve, which means the watch keeps running through a weekend off the wrist. The bracelet closes with a foldover, push-button clasp in PVD and titanium. Daily wear is fine, though splashes are the sensible limit for water exposure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swim or shower with my Rado DiaStar Original?
Not really. This Rado DiaStar Original is rated to 3 bar, or 30 m, which generally covers rain and hand washing. Swimming, showering and hot water are best avoided, since steam and pressure can get past the seals over time.
How long does it run if I leave it off my wrist?
The Swiss automatic movement has an 80-hour power reserve, so it generally keeps running for about three days off the wrist. After a longer rest, wind the crown a few turns and set the date before wearing it again.
Will a 35 mm case fit a smaller wrist?
Yes, a 35 mm case with a 21 mm lug width generally suits small to medium wrists well. It is a compact size, so people used to 40 mm watches may find it noticeably more discreet on the wrist.
Is this watch for men or women?
It is listed as unisex. The 35 mm size and gold-tone bracelet work well for either, and the crystal indexes give it a dressy feel suitable for both daily wear and smarter occasions.
How does it compare with a thinner dress automatic?
At 11.9 mm thick, it sits taller than a slim dress watch, but it adds a faceted sapphire crystal and an 80-hour reserve. If you want a flatter profile under a cuff, a thinner alternative may suit better.
Does it need a battery or regular service?
It is automatic, so there is no battery to replace. It generally benefits from service every few years to refresh lubrication and check the seals, which matters given the modest 30 m water resistance.
Editor's take
Rado's DiaStar line has long been about scratch-resistant materials and jewellery-like finishing, and this 35 mm Original carries that idea into a compact gold-tone package. It suits wrists that find modern 40 mm cases oversized, and works for men and women alike.
The Swiss automatic movement gives an 80-hour power reserve, a practical figure that lets the watch sit unworn over a weekend without stopping. The case mixes CVD-coated hardmetal, stainless steel and PVD, while a faceted sapphire crystal protects the dial with its crystal indexes.
The main limit is 30 m water resistance, which covers splashes and rain but not swimming or showering, so this is not a watch for water sports. At 11.9 mm thick it also sits taller than a typical slim dress watch, which may matter under a fitted cuff. The foldover push-button clasp with titanium is secure, though the gold-tone finish will show wear over time.
It is best for anyone wanting a small, dressy automatic with some sparkle and a long reserve. For a similar budget, look at slimmer dress automatics with plain dials if you prefer understated styling over crystal detail.
