What is the best watch under £200?

The short answer, from the watches we track at Bravery Watch: the Seiko 5 SNK355K is the best first automatic under £200, the Orient Contemporary the best cheaper one and the Orient Bambino Version 7 the best dress watch. For swimming and diving, the Orient Kano; for a quartz field watch with a sapphire crystal, the solar Timex Expedition North Field Post. For women, the Guess GW0308L5 to swim in, or the small, slim Skagen Freja Lille. If I could keep only one, it would be the Orient Contemporary, a 40 mm automatic you can swim in. What does £200 buy that £100 doesn't?

Mostly, an automatic movement. Of the 829 watches we track at £100 or less on Amazon UK, only six are automatic; of the 401 between £100 and £200, 50 are. Sapphire crystal is more common too: 51 of the 401 have one according to their listings, against 39 of the 829.

Water resistance hardly changes. Of the 829 watches at £100 or less, 165 are rated to 100 metres or more, against 96 of the 401 between £100 and £200; among those whose listing gives a rating, that is 29 and 31 per cent. If you just need a watch to swim in, the second £100 adds little, and the same goes for digital (LCD) watches: only seven of the 401, not counting smartwatches. The brands that fill the shelf under £100 almost vanish here: among the watches we track, Casio, Ravel and Sekonda have more than 300 at £100 or less but only four between £100 and £200. Guess, Tommy Hilfiger and Daniel Wellington take their place; Guess alone accounts for 72 of the 125 women's watches in this range.

The mix of automatic brands shifts within the range too: between £100 and £150, most of the automatics are Invicta, 17 of 24, while between £150 and £200 at least half of them are Orient or Seiko, two brands we did not find at all at £100 or less.

What is the best automatic watch under £200?

If a friend asked me to choose their first automatic, I would show them the Seiko 5 SNK355K, a 37 mm steel automatic with a day and date display, a Hardlex crystal and a see-through caseback. At 37 mm it is one of the few men's watches here at 40 mm or less. Its listing gives 30 metres and adds "splash and rain only", so it is not one to swim in. An automatic is a mechanical watch that winds itself as you wear it, so it needs no battery, but it keeps less exact time than a quartz watch, and most automatics stop after a day and a half to two days off the wrist. If your budget stops at £150, the Orient Contemporary is a 40 mm steel automatic with a blue dial and 100 metres of water resistance, so you can swim in it. The Orient Contemporary is the only Orient we track with a current Amazon UK price between £100 and £150.

For a dress watch, the Orient Bambino Version 7 has a 38.4 mm steel case, an automatic movement that can also be wound by hand, a black dial with Roman numerals and small seconds, and 30 metres of water resistance. What is the best dive watch under £200?

No watch is truly waterproof; the figure on the listing is its water resistance. A rating of 30 metres means rain and hand-washing, 50 metres a brief, shallow swim at most, and 100 metres is the rating to swim with; for diving, look for 200 metres and a screw-down crown, as our water resistance guide explains.

The Orient Kano has both: a 44 mm steel automatic, which its listing also calls the Big Mako, with a screw-down crown, a screw-in caseback and 200 metres. Our catalogue lists it as the Orient Sports 44mm. The Orient Kano costs between £150 and £200 on Amazon UK.

The Seiko 5 Sports SRPD65K1 is a 42.5 mm automatic with a unidirectional rotating bezel; its listing gives 100 metres but does not mention a screw-down crown, so it is a watch to swim in, not to dive with. What size watch should I get?

Big watches dominate this range: of the 245 men's watches we track between £100 and £200 on Amazon UK, only 39 measure 40 mm or less. If your wrist is slim, look at the 36 mm Bertucci, the 37 mm SNK355K, the 38.4 mm Bambino or the 40 mm Contemporary rather than the 44 mm Kano. Is a £200 watch cheaper from Amazon US?

Usually not, once you count the VAT. Across the 246 watches on sale on Amazon US, Amazon UK and Amazon.de that cost $100 to $200 in the US, the median UK price is 24 per cent higher, but UK prices include 20 per cent VAT and US prices exclude sales tax; without VAT the median gap is 3 per cent. For about one watch in five, though, that gap is more than 20 per cent, and a US order can then work out cheaper. Our Orient price comparison found the same for Orient: the gap is mostly VAT.

Ordering from the US does not avoid the VAT. According to GOV.UK, on an order of £135 or less the seller adds the VAT at checkout; above £135 the delivery company collects the VAT and any customs duty on delivery, and carriers such as Royal Mail add a handling fee. A 3 per cent gap will not cover international shipping, let alone that fee, so on this budget I would buy from Amazon UK.

What should I check before buying a £200 watch on Amazon UK?

Look at the seller first: the product page says who is selling, and the warranty can depend on it. Citizen gives its warranty only on watches from an authorised retailer, and Seiko warns about unauthorised sellers on its own website. If the seller is not the brand or a retailer it lists as authorised, ask about the warranty before you buy and check the watch when it arrives; our guide on how to spot a fake watch shows what to look for.

In the UK you can cancel an online order within 14 days without giving a reason and reject a faulty watch within 30 days; under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, a fault that appears in the first six months is presumed to have been there from the start. Amazon UK prices include VAT, so the £200 limit is the price on the page.
